FAQs
What are microgreens?
Simply put, microgreens are baby plants. The seeds are densely planted and harvested at an early stage of growth, typically between 7 to 21 days after germination. They are known for their vibrant colors, intense flavors, and nutrient density.
How do you grow microgreens?
Microgreens grow in rectangle trays and are bottom watered either by hand or through automated watering. This controlled process drastically reduces diseases which affect fully grown plants using conventional methods
Are microgreens the same as sprouts?
No, microgreens and sprouts are different. Microgreens are grown in a growing medium and have both stems and leaves. Sprouts are typically grown in water and are harvested just as the seed begins to germinate, consisting of the root, seed, and tiny emerging shoot.
Why not eat regular vegetables?
We love full size veggies, but microgreens have a few distinct advantages. Firstly they are more nutritionally dense than their full grown counterparts. Secondly microgreens can use 95% less water for the same nutrient content. Additionally, their taste is more robust and flavorful.
What kind of microgreens are available?
Currently we’re growing broccoli since it is a nutritional powerhouse that tastes great. We’re also growing pea and sunflower varieties which are heartier and more snackable. If there are other varieties that interest you please reach out and we can accomodate!
Why don’t you use plastic?
Plastic containers are the current go-to for microgreens and while they’re convenient they can be destructive to the environment. HP Hydroponics has sourced three sustainable options for packaging including 1/2 plastic, minimal plastic and full-eco. Reach out to discuss the best needs for your customers.
